Shinryochu ~In the Room~ final impressions

And I am done with another drama finally. Since I have been extra busy with work the past couple of weeks I had not had the time I expected to have to get through this one as quickly as I wanted but at least now I am done and can move on.

Near the end the drama actually started to get good, probably because things became less vague and there were understandable answers to why certain characters acted the way they did. I still think they over did it with some of them so the resolutions did not come off as very natural.

Of course when I say resolution I mean getting to the place where things ended. Many of the cases would have a session and not really give any indication it was the final one. The patients saying that they did not want to come back did not work as that was said earlier in the series and they would still come back and plenty of them came off as still feeling like there was more to be explored in their matters.

I have to say that I was impressed with Tanaka Juri in this. It was hard to tell what his acting skill level was in Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou or Sprout but he really does seem to have talent going by his performance in this series. I hope he gets more roles in the future, especially bigger ones that will help show what skills he has.

My favorite episodes ended up being the last two as they only focused on two plot lines, Ryo's personal life and what was going on with Tanaka Shun (Takada Sho). And I think if the series did not jump around as much as it did and instead did this kind of focus for the other plots it would have come off better. I can understand why they did not go that way but I think the story telling suffered as a result.

I honestly did not like the plot with Tenma Ryo (Inagaki Goro) and his wife Kanae (Sakai Miki) until the end when the big revelation about it happened. And it was because Kanae just seemed all over the place until that missing piece of the puzzle was laid out and then that behavior made sense. Though I think it would have been much better for it to be hinted at a bit more in ways a viewer would get early on in the series would have made it stronger. Looking back they did seem to be trying for that later on but it came off as too little too late.

So over all I still find it a weird drama. It just was all over the place in the beginning and only seemed to start making sense at the end once it dropped most of the plot lines it had running. Maybe I would like it better with a second viewing as I would have an idea of what was going on but I do not feel compelled to do so at all.

At this point I doubt I am going to catch up in time to watch Kamen Teacher before it finishes airing so instead there will be a blast from the past as I finally finish up Scrap Teacher, years after I hit the midway point for it. It is one of those dramas that never got finished being subtitled so I will have to finish it off without those to help, but it was a rather simple drama from what I can recall so I am not too worried. But before that it will be the Ataru SP, which I hope to watch and review within the week.

Johnny's Under 100: Nakajima Yuto

Nakajima Yuto
Group: Hey! Say! JUMP
Birthdate: August 10, 1993

Yuto has had an interesting career to follow. He started off as a little Junior that got pushed a lot and seemed set for future success. Then he debuted in Hey! Say! JUMP that promoted the young and cute image that he was quickly growing out of so he fell out of the lime light. Now he seems to be getting set to be one of the more well known members.

I think his recent drama roles will eventually lead to something and the fact that he no longer looks cute will become an advantage in getting more roles.

Yamada returns as Kindaichi in Malaysia

It has been announced that the Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo series will be returning with another special lined up to air in January 2014. The special will be filmed in a foreign country like the last one with this time the location being Malaysia.

Yamada Ryosuke will reprise his role as the lead character from the last special and Arioka Daiki, Kawaguchi Haruna and Wu Chun will also be returning with their respective roles.

Anime News Network article (English)

It is nice to see Yamada return to act in a drama and Arioka getting something is a bonus as well. Though I will hate it if he goes back to the hair he had for the last one. Curls just do not suit him.

I would have hoped that this series would get another chance as a drama series but at least it looks like NTV is at least trying something different with it with filming outside of Japan. And this filming in Malaysia will be the first for NTV, so there might be potential for them to return to the country for future projects if it goes well.

With the filming being in Malaysia I wonder if they will try to do something for the fans in that country or keep it strictly geared for the filming of the drama. In any case this is not an opportunity that fans of that country get regularly so I hope they can enjoy it but keep in mind to act respectively.

The Shounen Club 21 December 2008 review

And now for the final 2008 Shounen Club episode.

Things start off with the usual Junior introductions though there are a few noticeable differences in that compared to the usual shows. The big one is that there are a few Kansai Juniors introduced, Nakayama Yuma, BOYS and B.A.D. Also Morimoto Shintaro is nowhere to be seen. I can only assume he was busy with the Snow Prince movie, as filming for that would probably fit this time frame.

We are then moved to what looks to be the same stage but had to be filmed at a different time with Koyama Keiichiro and Nakayama Yuichi filling their usual roles as hosts of the show. We get what looks like the typical number of Juniors on the program for an episode sitting on stage behind them.

They bring out two guests for the episode, Yabu Kota and Yaotome Hikaru. They start off with talking about Christmas and Yabu mentioning he always seems to be with Hikaru every year and Koyama says for him it is Kato Shigeaki with Nakamaru chiming in to say for him it is Ueda Tatsuya. The two then bring up that they recently went with the rest of Hey! Say! BEST to ride a roller coaster. They then have Yabu read a letter from a Hey! Say! JUMP fan which prompts them to show VTR of the group's various performances over the past year.

It goes back to Yabu and Hikaru with the hosts so they can introduce their "present" which is a performance of Mayonaka no Shadow Boy and School Kakumei, which looks like it was filmed sometime along with the introductions of the episode.

There is then a VTR segment that goes over various guest performances from the past year. Then it is Kis-My-Ft2 and A.B.C-Z's turn for an MC segment. The talk of course was mainly about their first concert. But it did diverge a bit for Ebi to talk about Hashimoto Ryosuke as a new member of the group and Tsukada Ryuichi brings up that there is a seven year gap between his age and Hasshi's with Hasshi only being fifteen.

They then show some footage from the concert, which makes me wish they had released this on DVD. They probably still could as both groups have debuted but seeing how long ago it was and the fact that they are on different record labels I doubt that will ever happen.

The again go back to the MC before there is a present from Ebi this time as the group does a performance of Vanilla. Even from the start of this group it was pretty obvious that Hasshi was meant to be their center, which in the end probably worked to their favor as I doubt A.B.C. would have debuted without him. As talented as the other four are groups need to have that one member that can draw non-fans in and Hasshi seems to be natural at this. Plus there is an issue of age and Hasshi lets them reach to a younger fanbase than if it was just the older four.

In this episode there are little VTR skit segments with some of the Juniors dressed up as reindeer, BOYS, Kitayama Hiromitsu, Kawai Fumito and Tanaka Juri, called Tonakai-san (Mr. Reindeer). These segments probably are best with translations as they are comedy skits that rely on understanding what it being said.

Going back to the live talk part of the show it is time for the other Kansai Juniors, Yuma and B.A.D., to get some spotlight. Both get to talk about being a a drama, for Yuma it was Battery and for B.A.D. it was Gokusen 3. This is followed by clips of Kanjuu performances in the past year.

There is then a Christmas medley with mostly the younger Juniors and lead by Nakayama Yuma for almost all the songs. There is also a weird moment when Juri is given a rap to do during the Japanese version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town of all songs. I would like to know who thought that was a good idea. Other than that the medley is fun to watch and full of cute.

Then for something different there is a performance of B.A.D. singing their group song Aishiteru. I think this is one of their songs I like the most.

But things do not end there as there is a third guest for this episode that has been waiting in the wings, Takaki Yuya. He joins the duo so they can do the usual Oretachi on Seishun/Jitabata Junjo mash up they have been performing together.

Going back to the talk portion of the episode it is B.A.D. with Takaki on stage to discuss the trio going to a Taiwan award show earlier in the year. From what I recall this was Gokusen 3 related as the Gokusen drama series was quite popular in Taiwan so they were invited to show because of that.

And we get to see some clips of the trio at the award show, which includes each one introducing themselves in Chinese and a bit of their musical performance, which is the three performing Ultra Music Power. The performance is interesting to listen to if just for the fact that there is no back vocal track so it is a fully live performance. Though it does sound like a mess.

There is then a present from Takaki, which is a performance of one of his solo songs, Kumo no Ito. I have loved this song since I first heard it watching this episode back in 2008. Though it should be no surprise as not only is Takaki one of my favorites but it is a rock song and I love rock and rock-pop. I so want this song as a CD track and keep hoping that one day HSJ will release an album with solos for all or at least most of the members as it may actually have a chance of happening.

There is also a Question? performance right after and the band performs their song Parallel World. I love having their performance on this stage with the crowd as close as they are as it really gives it a concert feel and a bit of a different atmosphere than usual.

When we go back to the other stage it is for a game segment. The game is an introdon game and the Kanjuu get added to the usual teams plus a couple of the younger Juniors who normally are not in the games. As usual though Kawai is so good at this game it hardly seems fair so they quickly change things up to make sure the two younger ones get a chance to try to even things out. The game ends up being pretty fun as with the new contestants in it there are unexpected moments that usually the game does not get with the regular line up.

There is another Tonakai-san segment that ends with Kitayama showing off a bit with his roller skates while in costume.

Then it is back to the talk segments with Butokan, though they are down one member as it seems like Johnny's did not want to pay to have Hamanaka Bunichi come over with the other Kanjuu in the episode. The group brings up that they made their debut on the program with last year's Christmas Special episode.

The group does a special medley of their group songs as their present for the episode. Even though they group has not been known for being able to get all five members together for all their performances it still looks weird when they are missing a member.

Following this is a Junior ni Q segment with BOYS being the MCs for it. The topic is Christmas memories. First up is Kikuchi Fuma who talks about a memory that involves three pieces of candy.

Next is Morita Myuto with a story about waking up in the middle of the night for one Christmas.

Then it is Kyomoto Taiga who talks about wanting a large doll of an anime character but instead getting a small version of it. And that ends the segment.

There is then another performance, this time BOYS performing the song Love or Guilty. They show off some acrobatic skills in the song but otherwise not much else really makes the song stand out. Not that it is a bad song but its not the most memorable.

Following that Koyama and Nakamaru read postcards from fans. The postcards are from fans of the two and talk about their past solo performances. So of course after this there is VTR of those performances.

Then it is back to talk to Kisumai alone. They are asked if they give gifts to each other for Christmas but Fujigaya tells them that they only give gifts for birthdays. After that Senga Kento reads a request letter that mainly talks about their song Smile. There is then a VTR of the group's performances from the past year.

After that they return to talk to the group a bit more before showing their present, a performance of their group song Kis-My-Me-Mine. I am glad to see the group going back to roller skates as I know they will not be using them forever and even if they are gimmicky I love how cheesy they are.

We get to see the talk stage one last time as Koyama and Nakamaru thank everyone who sent requests in. They then announce the finale present of the episode, the end song.

The end song for the special is Cinderella Christmas sung by all the main Juniors that were a part of the episode as well as the three guests and the two hosts.

So we are definitely in the start of Kanjuu getting promotion. Eventually Yuma will take the lion's share of it in the coming year but the rest are not forgotten in the process, or else we would not be getting the amount of time dedicated to them in the new episodes of SC.

And with that it is time to go into 2009 where there was a lot going on, or at least it seemed to from what I could remember. It was also the year I was in Japan and got to see a filming of one of the months' episodes as part of the live audience. Something I wish all Junior fans got the chance to do as you get to see parts that they cut out of the episodes and it is a fun experience watching on video what you got to see live.

Kyomoto goes Jidaigeki

It has been announced that Kyomoto Taiga will be part of the supporting cast of Takizawa Hideaki's upcoming Taiga drama special, Nezumi, Edo o Hashiru. The special will air on January 9th of 2014. Kyomoto will play a character that falls in love with the sister of Tackey's character.

Sponichi article (Japanese)

Quite happy for Kyomoto to get an acting role outside of the late night NTV slot finally. Hopefully it will just be the first of more to come. But it seems like he is on track for getting much more work than before now that he has a more flexible schedule with Horikoshi.

I would not be surprised if Tackey suggested using Kyomoto because of his part in Takizawa Enbujo. Tackey has always seemed to be the kind of guy to try to bring up others with him whenever he has the chance. But that is just wild speculation on my part.

Kyomoto has been a Junior for so long it would be nice if he was able to catch some breaks as he is one of the Juniors I would like to see eventually debut.

Kitayama goes to court

Kitayama Hiromitsu will be starring in a drama on NTV for the fall drama season. The drama will only have fifteen minute episodes and be a comedy series based in a court room and Kitayama will play a lawyer. The title of the drama will be Saibancho! Onaka Sukimashita! and starts on October 5th.

NTV OHP (Japanese only)

I guess it was only a matter of time before Kitayama got his chance to star in something. Though I am not surprised it is something rather low profile as he does not seem to have hit it off as well as Fujigaya Taisuke and Tamamori Yuta when it comes to drama roles. Maybe that will change or maybe he is on a path to only get weird roles or roles in weird dramas. But I think his personality does lean towards things that are more lighthearted so I am interested in seeing how this does for him.

I am also interested in this new time slot as it is right after the usual late night NTV drama slot that has been dominated by Johnny's for about a year and a half now. But it will really depend if there is something to replace this drama in the following season before true speculation can start about it.

The Shounen Club 4 January 2009 review

And now we begin the 2009 episodes, where not much has changed from the finish of the 2008 episodes.

The show opens up with a performance where we get the usual introductions. The song is Hatsu Uta, which should be familiar with those who have watched Johnny's Countdown before. A few of notable things with the introduction is that Sanada Yuma and Nozawa Yuki seem to be getting more and more connected with the Jr Boys group. This will eventually have them be officially merged to create Mis Snow Man later in the year.

Morimoto Shintaro is back after being missing from the Christmas special. Also Takahata Misaki is missing from this episode. I am pretty sure he has not left Johnny's yet as I do recall the initial four member B.I.Shadow line-up had him in it but shortly after he was gone and Kochi Yugo was added.

There is the usual opening talk to introduce the theme which is Mirai (future). And of course this leads directly to the usual theme medley. It now seems like the new norm for it is to have the older Juniors be mixed in with the younger ones for the songs. But some of the Jr Boys members get the chance to have their names on the screen during one of the songs which is a step up for those few.

The first MC segment gives Nakajima Kento and Kikuchi Fuma a chance to be highlighted as they talk. I could not really follow what they were saying though but it sounded like Fuma was saying something about water.

The Juniors then perform a medley of songs starting with Morimoto Shintaro leading a performance of Tackey & Tsubasa's song Diamond. I actually like the song and it makes me miss hearing Shintaro's singing voice, which is fairing through puberty well from the snippets of it I have been able to hear of it.

Then it is Nakaken and Fuma singing Arashi's Hadashi no Mirai with the Junior grouping of those their age, like Takada Sho and Masuda Ryo.

Then Butokan, with all five members for a change, are brought out for a talk segment. Yara Tomoyuki does most of the talking as he brings up dancing for what he thinks about the future then talks about the new song the group will be performing which is a ballad.

The song is called Yuki no Furu Hi and you better believe they found a way to dance to this. I am still trying to figure out how I missed that Hamanaka Bunichi had a strong presence when it came to the vocals of the group. I guess I must have been focusing too much on Senga Kento of something to miss something that is so obvious to me now.

I dare anyone who has not watched the episode before to
guess what Fujigaya was supposed to be drawing.
Then it is time for the game segment which brings Yara on to be a judge. The game this time is a drawing competition where contestants are only given the prompt as a word then have to draw it. The best drawing of course wins. This is really mostly fun to see which Juniors fail at drawing. And it was rather easy to guess who would win each round by just looking at the results.

This episode not only has a guest but also a special guest with Takizawa Hideaki being the main guest and Yamashita Tomohisa. Tackey is there to promote his first solo CD release which was tied to the debut of his Takizawa Kakumei butai. In the MC it is brought up that Yamapi was on one of the coupling tracks for the CD with Tackey and a few other Johnny's and he gets to talk about that.

Tackey then performs the title track of his solo debut, Ai Kakumei. I have never cared much for the song and still do not. And this whole era for T&T seemed like a mess as someone seemed to really want Tackey as a soloist even though he really did not seem to care much for that for the long run.

Following this is time for Junior ni Q with the return of the topic about nabe (pot) foods. Tanaka Juri gets called over to explain his answer of oyster nabe.

Anderson Casey also gets a turn as he talks about a Korean stew dish called chige. Koyama kinda takes over with talking about it as he brings up that Korean food is delicious.

Then Takada Sho is brought over to talk about his answer which is for a dish that uses tofu. He seems to really love the dish. And he is the last of the Juniors in the segment that is still with the agency.

The segment is followed by a letter exchange between Kawai Fumito and Goseki Koichi. This is definitely one of these segments I wished I had subtitles for as it seemed like it was a lot of fun from all the cheers they got while reading their letters.

A.B.C-Z then performs Crazy Accel, which of course has had some changes made to the performance to fit Hashimoto Ryosuke into it. But he is not sticking out as much as he has been with a performance like this as he does do some acrobatics as well and does not come off as too shaky this time around but it probably helped it was nothing complicated on his end.

The show ends with A.B.C-Z and Kis-My-Ft2 leading a performance of Daybreaker. It really makes a good end song to be performed as it is upbeat and gives plenty of opportunity for the guys to have fun with it as it has very simple choreography to go with it.

There are hints of changes to come when it comes to the Junior line up with things getting set up for B.I.Shadow and Mis Snow Man. It feels rather exciting as my memories from being in the Junior fandom as these things happened come back. It makes me wonder how I will view the episodes of this current year when I get to them and they are at least a year old by then.

Ataru SP first impressions

With the movie of the series hitting theatres in Japan this is probably not a bad time for me to finally get to the SP.
Honestly the first half of the special can probably be skipped for anyone who has seen the show. Most of it is recaps of it with only bits of new scenes mixed in, and most of the new scenes suffer from the writers trying much too hard to be funny. It is really only when Inoguchi Ataru (Nakai Masahiro) finally shows up in the second half do things feel like they are going somewhere and the story begins to truly move forward.

Nakai is great as Ataru, which is no shocker considering how he did in the series. And he continues to show that he has more agency than before as he chooses to return to Japan to deal with the murder case and refuses to leave when Inoue Larry (Murakami Hiroaki) wants him to.

If any characters are stuck where we last left them it is Ebina Maiko (Kuriyama Chiaki) and Sawa Shunichi (Kitamura Kazuki). Even though there has been a change to Maiko's life, as she has quit the force to start up her own detective agency there seems to be no progress with her as a character. Since it is difficult to figure out what is going to happen with her the character just seems lost and it is hard to get behind her. And it does not help that her failures are played up for laughs. But she is still good to have to play off of Sawa and is really the character that gets things to happen with how she plunges into things head first.

The story is mainly on Ataru and his family, namely his younger brother Inoguchi Tasuku (Okada Masaki), who gets wrapped up in the murder mystery of the special. This is probably one of the stronger parts of the special as we never did learn much of anything about Tasuku in the series other than that he existed and his parents decided that with another child on the way it would be better for them to hand Ataru over to Larry. So taking a look at how that affected Tasuku and how the family is to move forward with Ataru wanting to be a family again was great.

Shimazaki Haruka is added to the cast to be the replacement for Mitsumune Kaoru, who suffered from illness for a while which lead to her having to leave AKB48. Paruru was probably not the best choice for this as her acting is no where on the same level as Kaoru's and she brought no life to her character, which in a drama full of characters with big personalities made her seem very out of place.

That said it made me happy to see that the writers/director must have really loved Kaoru as even though she did not have a single scene in the film they managed to work her in by having her be the new face of the department, Maiko's old role at the station. And when they had Atsumi Reiji (Tanaka Tetsushi) tell her to come back I felt it was meant to be a meta moment. Most likely as I too was wanting her to return.

I guess if I am on minor characters that are/were idols I should mention Tamamori Yuta as well. His part is quite small in this as the case really does not involve the Ebina family. He does get some small moments though, the biggest being searching Wikkypedia (I guess the did not want to spend the money to actually use Wikipedia).

While most of the case is tied up in the SP there are loose ends that tie-in to the movie that recently came out in Japan brought out, leaving those unsolved. I think it may not be a bad idea to wait to watch this until the movie can be viewed shortly afterwards if you want to avoid feeling like you need to rewatch the SP at least. But if they ditch trying to tack on a recap like they did with the SP then the movie should be good as from the little tease about it from this that we get definitely has my interest.

And on side note I do want to praise the series for knowing what a cracker is and that it is different than a hacker. I cannot recall any other time I have seen a series make this distinction so it gets kudos from me for it.

If you liked the series you will probably like the SP as it is much of the same. You may want to just skip the recaps in the first half though. But it looks like if you want to watch the movie you should at least watch the second half of the SP.

Tsukada Ryoichi
Group: A.B.C-Z
Birthdate: December 10, 1986

I never paid too much attention to A.B.C-Z before but their J’s Journey trip to Australia left an impression on me. Tsukada was easily stood out, as he was one of the most active members on the journey and brought a lot of life and fun to the trip.

Now watching older Shounen Club episodes I can see hints of this even back then but for whatever reason he never got the chance to shine as a mood maker like he did in J’s Journey. I would not mind to see more of him now.

Scrap Teacher ~Kyoushi Saisei~ final impressions

Yes I know this is an old drama and it seems like I am missing reviews for it. But the other reviews for it do exist, as I did them when this drama was still fairly new. You can find them here and here. I never finished the drama mainly because subs only exist for the first six episodes and left the final three unsubbed. I figured that I had reviewed things without subs before so I might as well finish this series.

Honestly it did not take long to get back into the series even though I am picking it up after a few years. This is mainly due to the fact that it is a simple drama that uses a lot of the familiar tropes of school dramas. That and none of the characters are all that developed which makes it easy to jump in on just about any episode and not feel terribly lost.

For some reason I thought I remembered the B.I.Shadow members in this, Takahata Misaki, Nakajima Kento and Kikuchi Fuma, having bigger roles but it must have been more me just focusing on them more. As while they did get an episode, or more exactly Takahata had an episode that focused on him, they mostly hung out in the background until they had something to say to antagonize someone.

While I did not care much for the super junior high students at first Takasugi Toichi (Yamada Ryosuke) has grown on me. Mainly because while he is supposed to be the super cool character type he ends up failing at it as no one treats him as such. In fact all the girls like the other two and Takasugi is stuck with a train obsessed fanboy. And I think with a character like Takasugi having him fail like this is a good way to get the audience to like him, as otherwise he would just be intolerable.

And for the other two there just was so little to go off of to figure out anything about them though it did seem like Arioka Daiki tried his best with the little he had. Chinen Yuri on the other hand was mainly just there to be cute.

And then Nakajima Yuto's character seemed to exist to mainly prop up the main teacher, Sugi Toranosuke (Kamiji Yusuke), and set events in motion. So he too came off as bland as there just was nothing to go with outside of good natured.

I do wonder what the original planned episode count was as the final episode is just a mess and it seemed like the first story line it rushed through was meant to be its own episode. Then there are characters all over the place acting out of character just so things can happen and things go from cheesy to just plain sappy as it tries too hard to make you feel emotional about what is going on. But honestly if they just told a good story they would not need to try so hard.

Unless you are a big fan of the actors in this drama I would skip it. While some of the concepts are interesting they are not handled well. And there is so much that is left unexplained and many scenes that seem to exist because the writers thought it would look good instead of whether or not it made any sense. And I think I understand why I did not bother to finish this years ago.

And with this episode we have an official introduction to Hip Hop Jump and see that Hey! Say! 7 West has made some big changes since we last saw them.

The introduction at the start has a minor change with each group or grouping announced getting to dance to the music of a debuted group's song. It seems a bit weird since they have not done it before. But Hip Hop Jump get to be introduced without Morimoto Shintaro being attached to them.

The theme of the episode is Favorite Song and they do a special version of the usual theme medley. What sets it apart is that the songs each get an introduction by the Junior that chose them as their favorite song. I will go ahead and highlight them all because I am sure something like this will interest quite a few. The first song is Amagasa by TOKIO selected by Totsuka Shota.

Then Kitayama Hiromitsu gets his pick of Otokogumi's Mihari. We get to see him play the guitar for this and I wish Kis-My-Ft2 had more songs that let the members who can play instruments do so.

Kawai Fumito is up next and his pick is V6's Can do! Can go!, which he explains was the song he danced to at his audition. This song is actually known to have been used for quite some time at auditions for the Juniors so it is something Juniors are expected to know the dance routine for.

Senga Kento gets to pick a song and goes with Bonnie Butterfly, a Kinki Kids song. He is paired up with Tamamori Yuta for the performance as Tamamori is starting to get pushed in the group, as I believe it has been announced by then he would be making his drama debut with the Gokusen 3 SP.

Then Miyata Toshiya performs his song choice, FRIENDS, another Kinki Kids song. This uses the remainder of Kisumai who have yet to perform minus one, who gets to perform the final song of the medley.

Fujigaya Taisuke's song is Hoshikuzo no Spangle, which he performs with Morimoto Shintaro and Nakajima Kento. The song is originally a Shonentai song but it has been covered by quite a few newer groups and even Sexy Zone performed it at their debut concert, IIRC.

The medley is followed by a Heisei Post segment that focuses on Hip Hop Jump, or mainly Tanaka Juri as the postcard from a fan asks about siblings and of course Juri can then talk about his older brother Tanaka Koki. But with this for the first time the names of all the members of the original line up for the group can be seen. And all but Camu Cade are with Johnny's. In fact all those four, Juri, Jesse (still going by Lewis Jesse at this point), Hagiya Keigo and Morita Myuto, have all been in the late night NTV dramas and are a part of the current older Juniors groupings.

It is then a Fresh Junior medley, which means most of the ungrouped Juniors will be featured as the label 'fresh' can be extended for a long time for some. It is mostly Sanada Yuma, Nozawa Yuki, Jr Boys, and Hip Hop Jump with some others mixed in for the medley.

Afterwords Koyama Keiichiro and Nakamaru Yuichi get to talk about their favorite songs. For Nakamaru is it Cinderella Christmas and for Koyama it is Believe Your Smile by V6.

Question? then gets to perform their favorite song, their own song Parallel World. When they finish the song the performance is not over though as the guest of the episode comes out, Uchi Hiroki. This episode is the return of Uchi to the program after he was promoted from trainee to Junior. He performs Ima, Koko ni with Question? and I guess this could be thought of the beginning of the decline of the band for reasons I will probably get into later, like another episode review.

The game segment is next and Uchi is there as a judge for it. Being one of the games that needs to have an actual judge it is the one where the teams are given prompts that they have to pick a member to act out and compete against a member of the other team. It also means it is one of the games that it helps a great deal if you know Japanese. The highlight of the game is Kawai Fumito pulling out the Matsumoto Jun impersonation but adding another layer to it with making it also a Kimura Takuya impersonation with the dance being Matsujun but the singing Kimutaku. And now that I have been a Johnny's fan for some time I actually got the "Cho Matte yo" at the end.

Then there is an MC with Uchi, I kinda wish they broke these segments up a bit. But Uchi talks about his favorite song which was All the Way, a song from the Playzone musical he was in that was his trial for getting his Junior status returned. At the end he and Koyama traded cute nicknames for each other before Nakamaru broke it up.

Then it is a full performance from Uchi, as he performs a song called Crave It. Again I wish we did not have this huge block of Uchi in the episode. But that is part my personal bias against him. I will give this performance this, the song suits his voice much better than the one he sung earlier and he brought energy to it.

It is then a special Kansai Junior ni Q, where there is only B.A.D., BOYS and Hey! Say! 7 WEST w/Yuma. The latter group is now larger so it actually has seven members, counting Yuma of course. And I will go ahead and go over the answers for each Kanjuu that is still with the agency. First up is Hamada Takahiro with TOKIO's Jibun no Tame ni.

Then it is Nakayama Yuma with Akanishi Jin's solo song Murasaki. He explains that when he first heard it he thought it was cool.

Kiriyama Akito goes with a song from his unit, Sakamichi. I do not think this has ever been performed on Shounen Club but in this segment they play the songs being discussed in the background so it can be heard.

Shigeoka Daiki is next and he picked Kanjani8's Sukiyanen, Osaka. which he explains was the song that he danced to for his audition.

Then it is Nakama Junta's turn and he shares his choice, Moments. I do not think it is mentioned anywhere who has this song and I do not recognize it.

Fujii Ryusei picked a solo song of Kanjani8's Okura Tadayoshi which has only been performed at concerts. The song is called Butterfly I Loved and from what could be heard of it in the background it makes me wish it would make its way unto a CD someday.

Kotaki Nozomi is next and he chose a KAT-TUN song, Never Again. It seems like after he passed his audition he was a part of a KAT-TUN concert as one of the background dancers and came to like the song through that.

Then the last Kanjuu that is still with the agency to answer is Kamiyama Tomohiro who answers with a song from the HS7W unit, Nijiiro no Uta. It is another song that has never been performed on the program to my knowledge though I wish it would be.

\
When we go back from that segment Kis-My-Ft2 have an MC segment. Of course since most had already had their say on what their favorite song was and why from the earlier medley it focuses on one of the members that did not, Tamamori. The song he picked was Kinki Kids' Diamond Story. Of course like I mentioned earlier Tamamori should be seeing the beginning of his push that will eventually place in the front of the group about this time.

The group then performs a medley of songs starting with a Hikaru Genji song, BRAVO! Nippon ~Setsu to Koori no Fantasy~ then moving onto their own unit song SMILE. And Tamamori actually got a solo line in the fist song, another sign that his star is on the rise.

This leads us to the ending song which being the second episode of the month is only for the older Juniors to perform. The song is Ki Se Ki, one of Takizawa Hideaki's solo songs.

If I have to name a least favorite Junior it would be Uchi. And it has nothing to do with his scandal but it was an opinion formed of him after his return to active Junior status. I was okay with him at first but over time he just got on my nerves for reasons I cannot fully figure out. I do still think it is cute how happy Koyama is to have him there on the program with him, but Koyama is always happy when a group member is on the program, and I guess that it extends to ex-group members as well. But Uchi grates on my nerves so it is hard to enjoy it much.

But outside of my dislike for Uchi I did enjoy the episode and honestly this is one of his better guesting appearances on the show so unless you actively hate on the guy you will probably also enjoy it.

BAD BOYS J first episode impressions

I believe I remember being pretty excited for this drama. It had some of the same team as Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou working on it and the cast list looked promising to me with Nakajima Kento having his first go as the lead in a drama. After watching the first episode I am glad I did not watch it as it was airing or I would probably be much more disappointed than I was.

Though it is still a drama that is miles better than Sprout and definitely not confusing like Shinryochu ~in the room~ so it is easier to enjoy but I was just expecting much more from it. As mentioned though I learned that I should not have had my hopes so high before actually watching it, but still I wanted more from it than what I got with the first episode.

I feel sorry for Nakaken who got saddled with a character like Kiriki Tsukasa. Tsukasa is either a pathetic weakling or tough bad ass with almost nothing in between. In fact he comes off as potentially having a multiple personality disorder with how different and sudden the change is. For a "secretly a badass" character to work you have to get a sense the character knows that he can kick all the asses of those around him but for whatever reason chooses not to. This really does not seem to be a part of Tsukasa's character so far and if it never is then it is going to be hard to reconcile how he can be both a wimp and badass.

It was not all bad though as I did like the main Gokurakucho trio, Kawanaka Yoji (Fukusawa Tatsuya), Iwami Eiji (Iwamoto Hikaru) and Nakamura Misao (Watanabe Shota). They are the main bulk of the interesting parts of this episode and I would much rather watch a drama about those three without having Tsukasa around.

Of course there is still a lot of the cast that only got the briefest of introductions in this episode to look forward to. I am very happy to have Hashimoto Ryosuke in this, as he was the highlight of Sprout for me and I do want to see what he will do with a different kind of role. And the rest I am at least curious about so I do want to still watch this drama.

Since I have an idea of what I am getting into here I know not to hold my breath for it to get much better. Some of it sounds like fun though but I can see myself just putting on the fujoshi vision and pretending that this is really a story about Tsukasa and Yoji being secretly in love. Because it already feels like the two have more chemistry between them than Tsukasa and his love interest in the drama, Yoshimoto Kumi (Hashimoto Nanami).

This is definitely an episode for B.I.Shadow fans to want to hunt down. Also expect some variations in video quality for a while as this is the time that getting someone to share the episodes got difficult until I believe sometime in the second half of the year.

In the introductions we finally get B.I.Shadow introduced by their group name. I fear though that this signals that Takahata Misaki will be leaving Johnny's soon, but until Matsumura Hokuto shows up it is not a nail in that coffin.

The guest for the episode is Hey! Say! JUMP and they get introduced at the end of the introductions. They stay on stage to introduce the theme of the episode Hiyaku (this has several meanings with a few being; leaping, becoming active, and emerging).

The medley is labeled a Jumping (or Junping going by the text on the screen) Medley which featured HSJ performing their singles with the younger Juniors. I do love that Morimoto Shintaro was in the medley, even though not in the same part of it as his older brother.

There is a letter exchange segment in this episode and it is between Kikuchi Fuma and Nakajima Kento. I believe Fuma mentions them being in the same auditions and of course that he sees Nakaken as his rival (in a friendly way of course).

BIS get to perform afterwards and they cover the KAT-TUN song GLORIA.What is nice about it is that Nakaken and Fuma get a good amount of solo lines so you get a good idea of their vocal levels. I have to say their voices have improved and changed a lot since this.

This ends up being a part of a medley and mostly Hip Hop Jump, Junior Boys, Sanada Yuma and Nozawa Yuki continue on with it. I am now waiting for Mis Snow Man to become an official group with the Junior Boys members being basically the rest of the group and performing so regularly with Sanada and Nozawa.

The first actual MC segment is with Butokan, who has all five members present for this episode. Outside of the usual Yara Tomoyuki doing a good deal of talking Hamanaka Bunichi and Senga Kento are prompted to speak a bit as well.

The song they perform is Yuki no Furu Hi, and again I find myself really drawn to Bunichi's singing. I hope he has a good chance as debuting in a Kansai Junior group, as a group can never have too many solid vocalists.

We get to the game portion of the episode and have Yara Tomoyuki as the guest judge for it. It was the usual act out a prompt game but each team only had three members each so the game went by rather quickly. Kawai Fumito continued to show that he had a greater impersonation range as he did one of Shounentai's Nishikori Kazukiyo.

There is then an MC segment with the members of Hey! Say! BEST who talk about how their unit image differs from Hey! Say! 7. Koyama Keiichiro congratulates Inoo Kei on entering university near the end of the segment.

HSB then do a medley of their unit songs and I find that I completely forgot about their song Switch. I believe this is the only HSB song that has not made it on a CD yet, though the performance is just with Arioka Daiki, Takaki Yuya and Inoo so that might be why it has not. But it would not be hard to get Yabu Kota and Yaotome Hikaru worked into it. As it starts with the letter 's' so it fits in with the rest of their unit songs.

The Junior ni Q segment starts off with a certain trio seemingly taken over for it. Not surprisingly the topic turns out to be about natto, or favorite toppings to put on natto.

After the three talk a bit Koyama and Nakamaru Yuichi come over to take their rightful places of hosts of the segment making the three leave. We then get the usual Junior ni Q segment. Jesse gets brought over to discuss his answer of scrambled eggs and ketchup.

Morita Myuto is called over as well as he has a few different items on his list of toppings.

It is not all younger Juniors as Yokoo Wataru gets to explain his choices, as he also has a few items listed as his answer.

A.B.C-Z are up next for a talk segment. Koyama starts it by congratulating Hashimoto Ryosuke for entering high school. I think it is really easy to forget how young Hasshi is when he is with Ebi, as the rest of the members are so much older than he is.

The group performs InaZuma Venus, which is one of the songs they get post-Hasshi. Of course this means it is not as acrobatic intensive as some of their other songs but the dance moves are still energetic and it is one of the songs from the group that enjoy.

The end theme is Yuuki 100% and this kicks off the recent love Johnny's has for this song. I remember there being a good deal of wank about this as not only was it a cover of a Hikaru Genji song but the one CD release Ya-Ya-Yah had was for this same song. The versions are a bit different as there has been some minor changes to the arrangement but Yax3 fans were still pretty sore, especially as it looked like Yamashita Shoon had left Shounen Club, much like how the remaining members of Four Tops did after NEWS debuted.

Putting that all aside though this was a fun performance to watch as the HSJ members looked to have quite a bit of fun, especially with some of them putting others' on their shoulders at one point. It is a good performance for HSJ fans to watch, and a pity the file for it was not in better quality.

So BIS keeps moving towards its member change up, which should be happening soon as we are quickly approaching Nakayama Yuma's first debut. That should be an interesting span of episodes to watch to see if it really was as confusing as I remembered it being.

There was a rumor around this time about HSJ releasing a single for Yuuki 100%, which I was against. Looking back on things now though I wish it would have happened. It would have given the group a CD release for 2009 and they probably could have gotten out an album before Hitomi no Screen. But there is no changing the past in the end.

Yokoyama Yu
Group: Kanjani8
Birthdate: May 9, 1981

Yoko has been my favorite Kanjani8 member for years. I think I just have a thing for hopeless idols as he really does not have any skills that the traditional idol has like good singing or dancing ability. But there was something that attracted my attention to him.

He was great as a supporting host in the very early episodes of Shounen Club and I do enjoy his songs. I admire the love he has for his family and his dedication to his career for sticking with Johnny’s even when he had no work.

The Shounen Club 5 April 2009 review

And we kick off a new season of Shounen Club, but unfortunately the video I have of the episode is pretty bad. I think it is around the summer or fall of 2009 the issues of finding the show for overseas fans to watch is settled but until then the files can differ greatly in quality as you will notice.

It's a pity the video is so bad as this episode has B.I.Shadow as a four member unit for the first time as Matsumura Hokuto has been added to the group. Unfortunately this means that Takahata Misaki's time with Johnny's is almost over.

When it is time to introduce the theme of the episode a few of the Juniors are brought up front to do so, Kitayama Hiromitsu, Tanaka Juri and Hagiya Keigo. They introduce the theme of the episode, Fresh, and the two younger ones get to talk about being in middle school.

This of course leads to the Fresh Medley. The medley is mainly made up of the more recent singles released by the debuted groups.

Part way through the medley they introduce some Fresh Juniors. Out of all the ones introduced the only one I recognize is Shimekake Ryuya, who was one of the Juniors in the Bad Boys J drama and member of Travis Japan.

The following MC continues to introduce the Fresh Juniors from the medley with Kitayama assisting Koyama Keiichiro and Nakamaru Yuichi with it. Shimekake wins points by saying that he admires Nakamaru.

The guest for this episode is the Hey! Say! JUMP sub-unit Hey! Say! 7. They start off performing a medley of their songs, which includes one of my favorite unit songs for them, Brave Story.

The MC segment has the unit talking about their solo concerts that they had during this time. And it pretty much ended up being the only unit concerts the group has ever had.

The MC does not last long though as HS7 goes back on stage to perform another medley of songs. It starts off with Salsa Ii na Ii ne! which was a song that played on a children's programming block for a while. Being such it is a very cutesy song and not one I would see the unit performing these days. But the performance is all kinds of cute and I would not mind seeing some of the younger Juniors perform this one day.

The game segment has been changed up a bit, the first noticeable change is that it is now called Junior Colosseum.

It has gotten rid of the teams from previous seasons and for the first game of the season, a dance battle, there are four pairs of two. It is set up like a tournament where two teams go against each other to see which one moves on to the next round so there are only two teams remaining for the final.

The dance battle is rather simple, all of it is to guess a song from one of the members of a team performing the dance and the other guessing. The level of challenge comes from how much of the dance can be done, with the final round being only one pose they have to use to guess.

Question? is up to perform next and it looks like Goto Hiromi is on his way of being worked into the group as he is playing violin for this. The song is called Kimi o Omou Toki and about halfway through the song Kitayama shows up to take over lead vocals. Do not really think that needed to happen but I guess looking back it could be seen as a sign of Kis-My-Ft2's rise and Question?'s decline.

There is a new VTR segment which is called Junior no Dengonban. It is like a video message board of sorts with one Junior leaving a message for another then that Junior gets to leave a message for another Junior and so on.

It is a bit of a hard segment to get to work as you would expect things to be replied to but they are not. And it ends up being Juniors talking to the camera and little else. Not to mention that they are probably limited to only be able to leave a message to Juniors that are at the taping so it is not fun as the dengonban feature in the Wink Up magazine.

So it probably is no surprise that the segment did not last, in fact I have the feeling that it did not last for the full season of the show, but I guess I will find out as I watch it.

Heisei Post has been given an update and is now being called You no Otegami Yomitai Desu!, with the 'tai' using the kanji from the daisempai group Shounentai. For this first segment it is only hosted by Juniors, but they are all the usual ones from Kisumai, A.B.C-Z and Question?

Kisumai then get to perform a medley of songs for the final group performance of the episode. And it is pretty much all my favorite songs from the group with Good-bye, Thank you, BRAND NEW SEASON, Inori and Kaizoku. And I love how they start Inori a capella. A great medley for the group overall.

The show wraps up with a performance of Jonetsu JUMP being performed by HS7 with Juniors joining them. Honestly I cannot see why this song was not made into a single A-side as it was one of their volleyball support songs and at this time they were due for a new single. In fact they could have thrown Salsa Ii na Ii ne! on as a B-side as well as the ending theme for the Nintama Rintaro anime they did at this time, Yumeiro. That should have been plenty of tie-ins for the single for it to do well enough and would have set them up to release their first album in 2009. But I will end this rant here and try not to continue it with other episodes as there is no changing the past.

Not a bad start to a new season. Probably the best part about it is that focus is shifting to the newer Juniors finally. We also get the mix of updated segments and new ones but it is really only those that have been updated that still remain on the program even if they have been changed a bit since. It has been a long time since a new segment has lasted on the program.

Kokubun Taichi
Group: Tokio
Birthdate: September 2, 1974

I did not really have an opinion about TOKIO’s members until I had the chance to see them in concert live. There I was truly cemented as a fan as I was able to really notice the members of the group. Taichi stood out to me with just how much energy he brought to performing, which had to be difficult seeing as he is the keyboardist of the band. Yet he still made sure to move around as much as he could and be a delight to watch as you could see how happy he was to perform.

This probably has been overdue but I have been thinking about what I want to do as a blogger and what I can honestly do. And I will be shutting down one of my blogs, Jubilee Moon, as I just cannot find a balance for it.

I think I figured out tumblr enough to realize I screwed up creating my first account there. I did create a new one that I will be mainly using for all the none Johnny's, and sometimes even some Johnny's, stuff that I am interested in. You can follow my tumblr here.

Also I have been begun writing a series of short novels I hope to publish over the summer. This is the first time I have been so serious about writing and I have one first draft done, a second well on its way to being completed and begun rewriting that first one. I hope to have something done by the end of the year and will definitely start promoting when I hit the final draft of the first short novel. I do have a blog for my writing, but there is not much there yet as I am still early on with the writing process.

Idol Minded is coming back from its hiatus but it will mainly just be the daily links. This is perfect for me as I doubt I could afford the time to do much more.

Never Ending Music Power will continue on, I don't think I could quit this blog anytime soon, but I will be cutting a back a bit. The Johnny's Under 100 series will continue without any changes as it is something quick and simple that I can do even if I only have a few minutes to spare. I will be cutting back on the Shounen Club reviews for at least the rest of the month though. It will go to one episode a week, and I will keep the Saturday due date for that. I am hoping that I can get a head of schedule with this and perhaps even get to the point that I can do extra reviews eventually. But I need to get myself back to where I do not have to worry about being late with it anymore and this is the best idea I came up with.

As one might notice I have just about dropped trying to follow female idols. It is not that I dislike them suddenly, but I just am not as passionate about them. I may from time to time still do a post about female idols, but like NEMP has always been the main focus is on Johnny's.

I have not had as much time to watch dramas as I hoped recently but I will continue on with those. Hopefully within a week or two I will be done with Bad Boys J. I really want to get to Kamen Teacher but I will probably watch something in between the two so I have something that does not deal with delinquents to watch. But the drama reviews will continue when I have the time for them.

I do plan on doing another Q&A Month for November, as I have the past couple of years. I think it has worked well for me as it does help give me something to write about. The post to leave questions at will go up on October 31st and I will answer questions throughout November and if need be December.

Cannot think of anything else to add. I do hope making these changes will get me back on track.

KAT-TUN just lost a 'T'

It has been announced that Tanaka Koki has had his contract terminated, so not only will he no longer be a member of KAT-TUN but he will no longer be a talent in Johnny's & Associates. It is mentioned the reasons for it is "bad behavior and repeatedly breaking the rules".

Johnny's-net official announcement (Japanese)

I have to say I am still rather shocked about this news. There were rumors for a while that something was up with Koki for a while but nothing that would lead someone to believe that he would be getting fired. Unless some of the rumors were actually true. But I always felt Koki was happy with KAT-TUN, especially after having Akanishi Jin leave, so why he would go down this path just confuses me. Then again I have not followed the group all that much for a while so perhaps I am missing something.

It makes me wonder why they went so far to terminate his contract when other Johnny's have been known to break the rules yet remain. I wonder if the rules broken were seen to be more serious, he did it more, or perhaps he agreed that terminating his contract was the better way to go than to just be pulled from the group and suspended.

If he's smart he should lay low for the rest of the year and a good portion of the next before trying his hand at any kind of return to the entertainment industry. At least if he tries to make it as a rapper he probably will not come up against Johnny's much.

I still cannot believe I am writing about this. This was just blindsiding.

Some Speculation About Tanaka Koki's Firing

$

0
I have had some more time to think about the news of Tanaka Koki's firing from Johnny's & Associates so I have decided to share them. As someone not really following KAT-TUN closely I know I could be missing something but here are my thoughts about it anyway.

So from J&A's announcement Koki had been let go of back on September 30th, which means the latest scandal photos probably were not the cause, more like J&A wasn't going to cover for someone who was no longer in their agency so they did nothing to stop them from going to print. Otherwise they probably would have paid whatever price the magazine would have asked for those as they are much more damaging than the usual dating/sex rumors that get printed.

At worst they knew about the photos before his contract was terminated and let it be the straw that broke the camel's back, but this is probably going to be information that we will never know unless Koki decides to spill about it, which could get him black listed by Johnny's no matter what he decides to do in the entertainment industry.

I think then what must have gotten him in trouble with them had to have been the night club he invested in, DJ-ing at clubs without letting them know and not enforcing the "no photos" rule when he ran into fans. Perhaps there could have been more but I think those are the rumors that had the most proof behind them. There are rumors about him using drugs which if they were true could be the main reason that he was dumped as Japan in general has a zero tolerance stance with drug use and he would be far from the first Johnny's dropped from the agency because of discovered drug use.

It also seems like this was something that was an issue for a while and only recently came to a head and ended with his termination from the agency. There is no other way to explain why the members of the group would have had a final group meeting about the issue if it was not a known issue. Also back on October 5th his brother, Juri, wrote a comment on the Juniors' R no Housoku Blog that sounded like he was weighing in on the issue by saying that he would keep admiring someone even if others would question it. Only the fans were left in the dark about it until now.

It's so sad things ended the way they did, as I cannot really see KAT-TUN without him as his raps helped make their songs stand out. And I just cannot picture the group with only four members. At least with NEWS the remaining four had done things as four so fans could see how things would continue on with them. With KAT-TUN there seems to be so much uncertain, and it does not help that Kame will be releasing a special project CD without the group. But I would not be surprised if we get something from the four member KAT-TUN eventually. But until then it will probably be hard to dismiss the fears of the fans of the group.

From Hyakushiki to Mousorisuto

With the news from yesterday I almost forgot that I wanted to spread the news about this. But you do not get bombshells like that often.

Hyakushiki, the late night program on Fuji TV with V6's Inohara Yoshihiko, Okamoto Keito (Hey! Say! JUMP), Totsuka Shota (A.B.C-Z) and Juniors Takada Sho and Sanada Yuma, will be seeing some major changes. First off it lost the regular member Fujigaya Taisuke (Kis-My-Ft2), which honestly I thought they would have to do much sooner than this. Then it will be renamed to Mousoristo and get a new regular for the program, Morimoto Shintaro. It will also now focus on giving the guys challenges to do.

JE News Daily article (English)

I have always liked Hyakushiki, even though I can see why it does not get a lot of attention with international fans as it is not the most entertaining of programs. For me though I like it as I feel like I am able to follow along well enough and I do pick up on some Japanese here and there while watching it much easier than other programs. Plus it did not become centered around eating food which was a big plus for me. So I was rather sad to hear that it ended but getting this news has made me happy. It sounds like it may be a more interesting program to watch if it sticks to the premise.

And of course I am really happy for Shintaro. Even though I think the program should have all the debuted guys, minus Inohara of course, leave the program to replace them with Juniors this switch will be good enough for me. I just hope I can find somewhere I can watch episodes.
