Nakayama Yuma gets up

$

It has been announced that Nakayama Yuma will be releasing a new single on September 10th. The title of the single is Get Up! and will come in three editions as well as a collected bundle.

The first limited edition comes with a DVD for the PV of the title track song Get Up! as well as a making of feature. The CD will have the title track as well as a B-side titled Butterfly and karaoke tracks for them both.

The second limited edition also comes with a DVD for the PV of the song Butterfly as well as a making of feature. It will have the same CD contents as the other limited edition.

Then the regular edition will just be a CD and it will come with the two tracks on the limited editions as well as have two bonus B-side songs not on those editions, Best Friend and I Say Goodbye.

And if you want to make sure to get all three editions CDJapan does offer a bundle for this release to help you with that.

Probably the most exciting thing about this single is that the application IDs are meant to be used with one for an album that is mentioned to be released later. Ever since Yuma began releasing singles as a soloist I had been wondering if we would get an album from him and it looks like we finally will. There is no date attached to it but I would be surprised if it did not come out before the end of the year as the application IDs are meant for special events in Osaka and Tokyo.

49 first episode impressions

Moving along with catching up with the NTV late night dramas it is time for me to watch 49.

From the start it is easy to see that this will be a human drama, that is to say something that really focuses on the characters than an overall story line. Though 49 does give itself one to help drive everything by adding in the touch of the supernatural by having Kagami Dan (Sato Shori) being possessed by his father's spirit.

So far we basically have gotten the set up for the series in the episode. I do not think there is enough to really judge Shori's acting ability, though I began watching Hungry! recently as well and it is easy to tell he has improved from that. This does seem like a role that would help him improve even more as long as the director is good enough to lead him in the right direction.

Jinguji Yuta is another I have seen in a lackluster performance for his first drama role with Sprout. It is even harder to tell if he has improved since then and his character does not seem like one that will get much spotlight. But perhaps I will be wrong and we will see more of him and hopefully will be able to see improvement with Jinguji's acting skills.

I feel rather foolish for not recognizing the actress for the character Takami Sachi, Yamamoto Maika, until I looked her up. She was in Kamen Teacher and a couple other of these late night NTV dramas. This is her first chance as a lead female character in one though, and from what I can recall of her past roles I have faith she will be good in this. Her character in this drama seems the most sympathetic so far.

I was about to write that I have not seen Yasui Kentaro in something yet but then I remembered BAD BOYS J. Yet I have a hard time recalling how he was in that, but even the better actors in that series did not come off as good in that mess so it is probably for the best. We only have the briefest of introductions of his character, Yashiro Kento, so far but it does look like there will be more of him and the rest of the basket ball team in the next episode and beyond.

The first episode did not really grab me, but neither did the first half hour of Kamen Teacher yet I found myself loving that series by the end of the hour. So I am more than willing to give 49 another episode to get me more interested in the story it is trying to tell. If anything it has some colorful characters to round out the cast and it should be fun to watch them I hope.

As a new year begins on the program we get a Shounen Club debut of a Johnny's most should recognize.

Starting off we have an introduction for the older Juniors and groups, with A.B.C-Z and Kis-My-Ft2 getting to perform group songs as a part of it. It ends though with the guests of the episode, Tackey & Tsubasa, performing one of their songs, Real DX.

The theme of the episode is Start. A good theme for the beginning of the year, but it is rather vague which I guess does give them free reign to decide on what performances to use. As Nakamaru Yuichi gives a spiel about the upcoming performance he trips over a word and Imai Tsubasa teases him a bit about it.

Next is a medley with mostly the younger Juniors performing and covering newer songs from the debuted groups. Such as Morimoto Shintaro and Snow Prince Gasshoudan performing TOKIO's advance.

And with the final song of this performance we get the debut of Sato Shori on Shounen Club. He is just back dancing for it, but with the other Fresh Juniors on stage with him he is easy to pick out and gets a bit of shared camera time.

And the following MC segment gives us an official introduction to these new Juniors that we should be seeing quite a bit of for a while. Honestly outside of Shori I either have no clue if the other Juniors are still in Johnny's or I know they have since left the agency. Either way it is easy to tell why Shori seems to get quite a bit of the spotlight at this point as he does seem like the most comfortable Junior there talking.

After that Kis-My-Ft2 is up to perform a new song on the program, My Love. Probably the most interesting thing about it is that Senga Kento gets solo lines, which was something I thought stopped happening once Tamamori Yuta started to get his big push. But it is a nice slow tempo song and one that has found its way on a CD since.

There is then a letter exchange segment between Nakajima Kento and Otsuka Yuya, who has since left the agency. They mainly just talk about their impressions of each other shortly after meeting and working in SUMMARY together.

B.I. Shadow perform after that and it is one of their group songs, Biribiri Dance. It is a nice upbeat song and we get to see all four members quite a bit, though Nakaken and Kikuchi Fuma are the only ones with solo lines.

A game segment is next and we get a new game in the form of a picture quiz. The first part has them look at a photo for seven seconds and then are asked questions about it. The next part basically had the Juniors get to see an extreme close up of someone and have to guess who it is. It was a pretty fun game segment overall, as the game was easy to follow along and you could also play along as well.

Following this is a performance by A.B.C-Z who did a medley. I was surprised that when they started it the first song was Fever to Future and not one of their group songs. The rest of the medley was with their group songs though.

Then it is a Kansai Junior ni Q segment with the theme being their dreams for 2011. Kaneuchi Toma is brought up as he explains his dream of going to Tokyo for work. And he talks about wanting to get a role in a drama. And he ended up being the only Kanjuu called up that I could recognize as still being with the agency.

T&T are brought out then for an MC segment and Tsubasa continues to pick on Nakamaru as when he sits down he puts his foot over his. They then move on to talk about T&T making their comeback as a duo after a long break from the last time they released something together.

They then perform Ai wa Takaramono, the song that was the A-side for the single they ended up releasing. I rather wish they moved around the stage more during the song instead of using the mic stands. At least there was Mis Snow Man in the back dancing for them to liven things up.

The end song is Jonetsu Jump and while the three from Hey! Say! JUMP do perform with the Juniors, it is not until about half way into the song. And after Kisumai and Ebi cover the song as groups. It will never stop feeling weird to see those two groups cover a HSJ song, even though HSJ did debut long before either of them.

I am so glad to have reached these 2011 episodes. As I have mentioned before there is a lot that happens in this year and we are already seeing some of that with Shori making his debut on the program. It should not be much longer until the other two members that will debut in the group Sexy Zone show up. That said in the closer future we have Kisumai's debut and the changing of the hosts as Koyama Keiichiro and Nakamaru finally take their leave. Then on a more somber note the change ups that happen in reaction to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

We are also almost at the episodes I was reviewing as I waited for this laptop to be returned with most of the SC episodes I have. So soon I will be going back to two episodes a week for a few weeks as I just have to go through and see if I have to edit anything from those.

This episode continues to give us new faces on the program, some more familiar than others.

Things start off with the younger Juniors performing Stand Up. It is a remixed version of the song but still a nice energetic song to kick things off with.

We get a few Juniors introduced and one that I recognize that has not been seen on the program yet, though he is one of the regulars of the current episodes, Kishi Yuta. While he gets a proper introduction he is not seen much for the rest of the episode and nothing more than a back dancer.

The theme of the episode is Yell. The hosts and the three Hey! Say! JUMP supporters briefly talk about the theme before moving on to the next performance.

The following performance is with the guest of the episode, Hey! Say! 7. The do two unit songs before they are joined by Arioka Daiki and Takaki Yuya to perform Arigato ~Sekai no Doko ni Itsumo~. I have gotten so used to seeing HS7 as a four member unit it is strange to see them back when they were five.

HS7 then get an MC segment where they are asked about times that they yell. Such as, Nakajima Yuto says it is when he is practicing on his drum set and Yamada Ryosuke when arguing with Okamoto Keito.

The Juniors then perform the theme medley for the episode. With the amount of A.B.C-Z featured it can be assumed that they probably will not have a solo group performance this episode, which they do not.

You no Otegami Yomitai desu! is next with Nakajima Kento and Kikuchi Fuma getting to read the letters. The first seemed to be about love and the other about going on a trip with a friend.

The present members of HSJ then perform a Rock Medley with Question? Of course they have a couple of their own members play instruments, like Nakajima on drums and Okamoto on guitar when they cover an Otokogumi song. It was nice to see Question? actually perform as a group for a change.

Following this is a Gekkan Koyamaru segment where Koyama Keiichiro shares a photo and a story about going on a trip to the beach with Masuda Takahisa.

There is then a Junior performance with the ungrouped Juniors, which includes Kyomoto Taiga, Masuda Ryo, Yasui Kentaro, Casey Anderson, Kawashima Noeru and Takada Sho. They perform I ZA NA I ZU KI, which makes this a rather NEWS heavy episode for the songs performed.

The game segment is a JUMPING Paradise version which only uses the members of HSJ that are present as participants. They get to play the song introduction game. It is probably best whenever they use a Hey! Say! JUMP song just to see the mad rush of the members to press the buzzer so they can answer.

Kitayama Hiromitsu and Fujigaya Taisuke get an MC segment together. This is mainly because they were in a drama together around this time, Misaki No. 1. They are asked to do self introductions, which of course come off as odd seeing as that is the kind of thing that is asked of new Juniors.

Kis-My-Ft2 then perform a medley of their group songs, starting with My Love before moving onto FIRE BEAT. Bit of an odd mix but I can only assume that they wanted to have them perform something newer along with one of their more popular songs for this.

There is a sudden shift to a VTR segment which focuses on NYC practicing for their performance on Kohaku Uta Gassen. Probably the most interesting thing about it is that we get to see them with Arashi as they go over their part in the programming as the group will be hosts that year.

Though not as fun as TOKIO more or less photo bombing the group as they head to the stage.

We return to the live stage part of the program again for Morimoto Shintaro with Hip Hop Jump performing the Junior song 1 for YOU. It is one of those Junior songs that I wish the Juniors would perform more often, and as it was never really a group song I cannot see why it is not used much.

The episode then ends with the older Juniors performing Kibou ~Yell~. Honestly I would have been quite disappointed if this song was not performed at some point during the episode considering its theme. And it made me happy to see Koyama join in part way through.

I do quite like the fact that we are back to having Fresh Juniors being introduced on the program, especially as there are some faces that I recognize since they are currently active as Juniors. Even if they are not getting much screen time at the moment it is nice to see that they are finally on the program and thus in the agency.

For the next few weeks I will have episode reviews twice a week as these are the ones I did while I waited for my laptop to be fixed. So all I have to do is check them over and do any editing that may be needed since I did write them months ago. Then it will go back to once a week when I get through those.

This marks the first episode I decided to review as I waited for my main laptop with the rest of the episodes on it to be fixed. I have gone through to make some edits but most of the review was what I wrote months ago.

The episode starts off with the Hey! Say! JUMP members that are the supporters for the episode, Arioka Daiki, Nakajima Yuto and Takaki Yuya introduce the theme medley. Morimoto Shintaro with Hip Hop Jump are the first up to perform.

The guests of the episode, KAT-TUN, finish up the medley by performing their song LIPS. I think this is an early sign that the group is going to have a stronger than usual presence in the episode than most guests.

KAT-TUN stay on stage as Koyama Keiichiro and the HSJ supporters come on stage to officially announce the theme of the episode, Koigokoro (one's love, awakening of love).

B.I. Shadow then take the stage to perform a medley of older Johnny's songs. It is nice to see all four members of the group performing throughout, though since they are wearing outfits that were originally for Ya-Ya-Yah I cannot shake that feeling of doom for any group of four that wears them.

There is then an MC segment with what can now be considered the main three of Kis-My-Ft2, Kitayama Hiromitsu, Tamamori Yuta and Fujigaya Taisuke. They talk about first love with Tamamori being asked to go first. Hiromitsu gets to say something too but has to keep it short as they need to leave to get on stage for the next performance.

Kisumai perform their song 3D Girl, which I never cared for too much but I guess the style actually lines up with the group's image post-debut.

The next MC is with KAT-TUN, so it is basically Koyama Keiichiro on his own to lead it and keep it on track. KAT-TUN may not be a favorite group of mine but I do think they are interesting to watch when they are all allowed to talk as you can get some interesting comments and reactions.

KAT-TUN performs what was their latest single at the time, ULTIMATE WHEELS. It was about this point that I began to really loose interest in the group, though it had been waning before, mostly because their newer music just did not click with me, like this song.

For the game segment they had Kame come out to be the judge for it. It had a mix of Juniors with Yuto, Daiki and Takaki compete against each other for who did a prompt better. Of course all the prompts dealt with Valentines Day.

I really wish they would have Kochi Yugo participate in the game segments more again. He was easily the highlight of the game segment with how he deviated from the standard lines and responses for the prompts.

There is then a special performance, with two members from the Junior groups, Kisumai (KitaFuji), A.B.C-Z (Hashimoto Ryosuke and Totsuka Shota) and BIS (Nakajima Kento and Kikuchi Fuma), performance Kimi wo Omou Toki (Romanesque Version). It is a stripped and slowed down version of the song so it can highlight the strength of the singers and it is a nice piece to see being performed.

The Junior ni Q segment takes us to Osaka as the Kansai Juniors get a turn. The topic is about the latest thing they are obsessed with. First up is Fujii Ryusei who claims to be obsessed with the hair of one of his fellow group members, Takemoto Shinpei, who is no longer with the agency.

Shigeaki Daiki is up next and I believe he talks about balls, or at least tennis balls from what I could tell. And that is all the Kanjuu featured that I am certain are still with the agency.

This episode gives us some introductions of some of the members of JaPAnese Hi!, or the large group of Fresh Juniors that just passed their auditions about a month before this was filmed. They should be familiar faces though as the four are Hayashi Takuto, Hayashi Ren, Kuramoto Kaoru and Sato Shori. (Though from what I have heard Kuramoto has recently left Johnny's.) It is really these introductions that make going back to watch these older episodes so interesting as there is no doubt that they have grown so much since then. Especially when it comes to nerves on stage.

They go and join the rest of their group to perform Marui Chikara. With so many members performing it is hard to assess the performing level of many of them. Though it does remind me of how many Juniors I have failed to keep up with over the past few years.

It is then time to wrap up the episode which they do with KAT-TUN performing the final song, PROMISE SONG. The older Junior groups get to come back on stage to back dance for them and that is how the episode closes up.

Over a good episode and I can finally say I have gotten over the KAT-TUN fatigue from their pre-debut days as I was happy to see the group as a guest. While I cannot recall if this is the final time KAT-TUN guests on the program it does feel like this would be a good final episode for that.

And of course it is great to see more of the Fresh Juniors, especially as a good chunk of them are now the ones that are making their way to the fore fronts. Not to mention that this also means we are only missing two members of Sexy Zone to have their Shounen Club debuts now.

This episode gives us more chances to learn about the wave of new faces that joined the program.

The episode starts with the usual theme medley with the theme being Tabidachi (setting off on a trip) and the Hey! Say! JUMP supporters, Nakajima Yuto, Arioka Daiki and Takaki Yuya starting it off with Dreams come true.

It is easy to see which members of JaPAnese Hi! are getting pushed as only four are a part of this medley and get to perform with Morimoto Shintaro. Sato Shori of course being the prominent over time but back then things looked more level.

Since there is no guest this episode it is just the hosts, Koyama Keiichiro and Nakamaru Yuichi, with the HSJ supporters on stage afterwards to talk about the episode theme.

Yuto, Daiki and Takaki then perform their group song Arigato ~Sekai no Doko ni Ite mo~. As they do so they introduce a few Fresh Juniors that have some skills to show off quickly. Not sure who is still with the agency outside of Hayashi Ren, who gets introduced again with his older brother Takuto. The others were Nishi Reito, Ichimiya Daiki and Fukumoto Daiki.

The introduction to JaPAnese Hi! members continue as the couple that can speak foreign languages get to show off their skills. It is mainly Kanazuru Hideki speaking but Okubo Lewis gets to use his Spanish near the end.

There is then a Junior performance which is mainly Morimoto Shintaro with Hip Hop Jump performing a song called 1 for YOU. This is the kind of song that I could see them performing today, or at least the remaining ones of this grouping of Juniors.

This is followed by a You no Otegami Yomitai Desu! segment which is hosted by various members of A.B.C-Z, Kis-My-Ft2 and B.I. Shadow. The first letter is asking about advice in relation to being a high school student.

The following letter is about Juniors that resemble animals. They also pull in Nakamaru Yuichi for this one but mostly focus on Kawai Fumito and his assumed resemblance to a horse.

Kitayama Hiromitsu and Fujigaya Taisuke then perform their duet, No. 1 Friend. There is not a lot to say about the song itself as it is rather bland and makes me miss the rest of the group. But KitaFuji were the ones getting pushed at the time so having this song was not so surprising.

The Gekkan Koyamaru segment is next with a theme for this one, sempai. Koyama and Nakamaru are able to share a photo that he managed to get with his sempai Domoto Kochi.

Nakamaru then gets ready to do a solo performance of two songs, Shooting Star and Film, with both songs having lyrics at least written in part by him. A good solid performance from him but honestly I would be disappointed by anything less from someone with his experience.

The Gekkan Koyamaru segment continues after the performance as Nakamaru takes a turn mostly talking about photos, including one with some of his fellow group members, as usual.

It is then Koyama's turn to perform a solo which is his solo song Uri Sarang, which uses Korean in the lyrics. It is also one of the solos released on the bonus disc of the limited version of NEWS' best of album.

Then it is Junior ni Q time with the Kansai Juniors. The theme this time is talking about things they want to see changed in others. Mukai Koji gets mentioned as one of the Kanjuu that someone wants to see a change with.

Nakama Junta gets to air a grievance he has with the other half of his duo, Kiriyama Akito. I was able to catch that it was something about his use of Kansai ben. And with that the segment ends.

A.B.C-Z get to sit down for an MC segment. Yamashita Tomohisa is featured in a VTR for this, as he talks about the members of A.B.C-Z. Or at least the ones that he pretends that he can remember.

The group then perform Dream ~5tsu no Negai~, which is a ballad so it lacks the usual energetic dances from the group's other songs. They seem to be trying to make up for that by adding a large star to the floor of the stage to have the members move around during the song so they are not just standing around during the performance.

With that we are at the end of the episode and it is time for the final song to close things out with. The older groups perform Sotsugyo ~Sayonara wa Ashita no Tame ni~, another ballad and with so many on stage it falls into the issue of just having everyone mainly just stand in place on stage.

And this is about where HSJ starts spending too much time on stage compared to the Juniors. It is not so bad with this episode though as at least one of the performances is to help highlight Fresh Juniors but I still have yet to recover from the HSJ-dominated era of the program. And it will probably be only made worse with the fact that I am heading right into those episodes now.

Other than that at least this is a time where at least some Juniors will be able to get a good amount of screen time, or at least anyone in the groups, Kis-My-Ft2, A.B.C-Z and B.I. Shadow. Only down side to that is that it makes it seem like there has been very little change in who gets featured on the program when compared to the most current episodes.

The Shounen Club 24 March 2011 review

We get the return of the clip show this month as only one episode of the program aired which was this 10th anniversary special. This is of course mainly because on March 11th of 2011 the Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami occurred. The disaster threw programing off for the month as coverage of the disaster and aid for the victims rightfully was made the priority.

That said there is a lot of text on the top of the screen throughout the program as that is all warning information about aftershocks still being felt in the Tohoku region.

This special looks to have been filmed before March 11th and like the clip shows from years ago focus on showing footage of older episodes.

Koyama Keiichiro and Nakamaru Yuichi are hosts for the episode, which will be the last time the duo host for the program. They are joined by Kitayama Hiromitsu, Fujigaya Taisuke, Kawai Fumito and Totsuka Shota to provide the in studio talk between the clips.

They start off with clips from the first episode of the series which uses some creative editing techniques to avoid showing Jimmy Mackey's face in the video.

There is some VTR with Yamashita Tomohisa who says some words about the program, which is pretty fitting as he played a big role in the early years of the program.

One of the features of this recap is that there is a quiz for the Juniors, and Nakamaru, to participate in that goes over various tidbits of the show. Such as the first question asking who showed up during the first ending song performance for the program.

When we return to the old footage we get to see clips of the early guest performances, which is basically just Tackey & Tsubasa and Arashi.

I find the Arashi performances a bit more interesting as they have guested on the program less and when they were they were still such a young group.

The program seems to be interested in visiting the early era of Arashi as the next batch of clips focus on PVs for the group and the behind the scenes footage that they did for the program with Ikuta Toma or Kamenashi Kazuya visiting the group to do behind the scenes reports.

The next set of clips feature Junior performances when the show was still at the studio they used to film at before moving to the NHK Hall. Most of the focus is on Yamapi, various members of Kanjani8 and KAT-TUN. There is a J-Support/K.K.Kity performance thrown in to show Koyama and Kato Shigeaki but it is obviously edited to cut a close up of Kusano Hironori out as the one for Koyama is "frozen" where that footage should have been.

After that set they move on to footage from after the move to NHK Hall. There are clips for all the debuted groups up to KAT-TUN, which makes me wonder why Hey! Say! JUMP was skipped over as they have not lost a member yet so there really was no reason for it. Unlike NEWS who only got to have their appearances as a six member unit shown without a trace of their previous performances on the program to be seen.

They then show clips from the Toma Scoop segments where Toma interviewed various sempai groups. I kinda miss these segments as the sempai groups seem to always be ready to have fun with them.

This is followed by a review of the comedy duos and skits that the show used to have, mostly from KAT-TUN and Kanjani8. This is also something I miss as it gave a chance for the Juniors doing them to really stand out as well as round themselves out as idols.

While the next set of clips is still focused on the debuted Johnny's it switches things out a bit with having the performances be from their pre-debut days. So we get to see proto-Tegomass as well as an eight member K8, though no shot clear enough to really see Uchi Hiroki's face.

Finally we get clips of the HSJ members during their Junior days. So lots of little Juniors to be seen and be amazed by how much they have grown since.

Interestingly enough A.B.C-Z and Kis-My-Ft2 are also lumped in with this set of VTRs. I guess this might be lumping the groups together by "generation", which might explain why HSJ has been missing from the debut acts VTRs until now.

And we get the first mention of Kisumai's debut as they are congratulated on it as Koyama and Nakamaru lead the final discussion to wrap up the special.

The discussion ends as Koyama and Nakamaru are given flowers by the members of NYC as part of their send off as hosts of the program as this is the final episode they will be hosting Shounen Club. They also announce that HSJ will be taking over as hosts.

The final video is not a clip but a performance by NYC of their song Yumetamago. Which seems like a weird way to end a show that was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its airing. But I guess showing cute kids performing a cute song is not the worst way to end something.

It is nice to get one of these episodes after so much time has now passed since the last. Especially as this gives us clips of the older episodes in good quality. And picking the Juniors they did for this was good as the four have been around for so long they would have memories from most of the episodes of the program.

It is also interesting to see how they decide to deal with footage with ex-Johnny's in it. It looks like for the most part they just made sure to cut the frames to edit members out or not just air footage, like any of the earlier NEWS performances.

Shigeoka Daiki in Gomen ne Seishun

It is that time again, time for the next season of dramas to start announcing their cast. For the TBS drama Gomen ne Seishun that is set to star Nishikido Ryo it has announced the actors that will play the students in it. Notably we have another Johnny's and it will be Shigeoka Daiki.

OHP (Japanese only)

From the looks of it Shigeoka's role will be as one of the more prominent students for the drama, which is about an all-boys school (Buddhist) merging with an all-girls school (Christian). So this should be a good step further into the world of dramas for him.

Overall Johnny's WEST seems to be doing well with getting drama roles which should be helpful for them in the long run if they keep it up. Of course it would be great if they could get their own variety show at some point, but they are still a young group so it could still be a bit before that.

Johnny's WEST's Zipangu dream

$

The second single for the most recent Johnny's group to debut has been announced. The single will be a double A-side featuring the songs used as the theme songs for the drama Again!, which stars Fujii Ryusei. The title of the single is Zipangu Ookini Daisakusen / Yume wo Dakishimete and will be released on October 8th and comes in four versions. Each version has a first press bonus of a clear file, with each version having a different one.

The first limited edition is the basic CD with DVD combo. The CD will have the two title tracks plus their karaoke versions. Then the DVD will have the PV and making of for the song Zipangu Ookini Daisakusen.

The second limited edition is basically the same as the first. The major difference is that the DVD has the PV and making of for the other title track, Yume wo Dakishimete.

The third limited edition is just a CD, but comes with a 20-page bonus booklet. The CD will also contain two bonus songs not included in any other version of the single, WESTERN PARADE and Can't stop.

The regular edition of the single will just be the CD but it will contain two bonus tracks not included in the other versions, SUPERSTAR and for now and forever.

There is also a bundle that CDJapan is offering if you want to make sure you are getting all four versions.

So glad to finally have a new single announcement from the group. It seems a bit late to release a single for the theme songs of a summer drama, but at least they are releasing the songs. And I love that in total we are getting six new songs with this single.

That all said I am surprised by the release date. They are up against Nogizaka 46 and there is just no way they will have good enough sales to beat that group. I guess Johnny's is just not going to care about keeping a number 1 debut streak going for the group. In a way that is not bad as it means that they will be a group that will not be so restricted with release dates as they have nothing to protect.

Honestly I am mostly more interested in actually enjoying the single than where it places, as these days it seems to be more about making sure to release on a date there is little competition than actually simply selling well.

The Shounen Club 8 April 2011 review

$

As mentioned with the previous review on March 11, 2011 the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami hit Japan and it had a wide affect for the nation in general. With the need to conserve utilities the programs that did run during this time were cut back to the bare basics, and Shounen Club was no exception. So for the episodes for April 2011 there is a great departure from the norm for the program because of this.

The hosts for the program are now Hey! Say! JUMP and the full group is present for these episodes.  For most of the talk sections of this episodes they are in this room and you quickly get the feeling that they filmed it all there before moving on to the next room where they do the performances for this episode.

After a long beginning talk we get the first performance of the episode, HSJ performing Arigato ~Sekai no Doko ni Itemo~. This performance pretty much shows what to expect for the rest of the performances for these episodes, simple sets that do not use a lot of lighting.

Nakayama Yuma then joins HSJ in the talk part to give his words of encouragement. I guess he works as the guest of the episode, though that is not really mentioned.

With Yuma there it means that we get a NYC performance and it is Yuuki 100%. While the performance starts out with just the three partway through a bunch of younger Juniors show up to back dance. I think the addition of the Juniors made the performance feel more uplifting as they filled all that empty space on the stage that just made things feel barren.

Next up the talk focuses on Yabu Kota as he gets to be the next to give some encouraging words to the fans.

Then on to the next performance, which is a medley of A to Z and Dream ~Itsutsu no Negai~ by A.B.C-Z. It is odd to see the group this low key but their flashier performances would seem out of place and not in the best of taste for an episode like this.

If you felt the 10th anniversary special was too light with the past footage of HSJ members then these episodes should be what you are looking for as this episode gives us a compilation of clips of the members of Hey! Say! BEST during their Junior days.

For the first time in the episode we see someone acting lively as HSJ talk about the clips and joke about their younger selves. This feels like a welcome break from the previous talk segments that were so solemn they were gloomy.

Next Morimoto Shintaro leads the little Juniors in a performance of Sekai ga Hitotsu ni Naru Made. This song seems like a perfect fit for what the episode is going for with trying to be inspirational as well as sensitive to current events.

Working to get all the HSJ members to say something Nakajima Yuto, Inoo Kei and Morimoto Ryutaro each get a turn this time around in giving a message.

Kis-My-Ft2 then get to perform and they perform their group song Inori. Out of their song library it is the song that is probably the most fitting. And the low lighting fits with the song rather well, so a good choice for the group overall.

Hey! Say! 7 get their turn of getting a clip compilation of their time as Juniors, and at the end briefly as newly debuted Johnny's. Like with HSB it is nice to see these performances and segments with clear picture and audio even though they are all cut short.

The following talk has them teasing Okamoto Keito about how stiff he was in one of the few clips he could be seen in. Joining the agency when he did left very little to choose from for him to be shown in this after all. And of course the rest of the talk was about the other members and just how much they have changed.

A new segment, Junior You Bin, is then introduced. It is really just a renaming of the You no Otegami Yomitai Desu! segment, but I welcome it if just because the new title for the segment is easier to remember. They just go over the information on how to submit the letters for the segment in this episode though.

This is then followed by the mainstay segment, Junior ni Q. Yabu and Hikaru host the segment which was filmed in the room that they have been filming the performances. The focus this time is on the fresh Juniors. In fact I do believe that this is Matsushima So's first appearance on the program as he is the first to talk about the topic for the segment, encouraging words.

Next is Miura Wataru who shares a quote from Nakajima Yuto, which seems to be more something Yuto said to him that encouraged him.

Kanazuru Hideki is next and it is surprising to see him so pushed at this time as he really seemed to disappear about as quickly as he popped up. It always makes me wonder about what happened when those changes occur. That said I noticed that Kishi Yuta seemed to have found a good spot to be sitting in as he can be seen in the background quite a bit in this segment.

Sato Shori of course gets called up as it was clear even then that he was getting a fair amount of pushing from the agency. It is interesting to see how nervous and unsure of himself he is here compared to the confidence he now has on stage.

Then Tanimura Ryuichi gets to talk. I believe he is one of those Juniors that pop up here and there from time to time as there is something familiar about him to me, but I do not think he has ever gotten a real push from the agency.

A face I do not recognize is up next, Taniguchi Yuya. I really feel like I do not know much about the current generation Juniors when I run into Juniors like him, even though I know at this point there are just way too many Juniors to keep track of, especially as Johnny's cannot decide which ones to promote themselves these days.

Then they talk to Okubo Louis, who like Kanazuru got a fair amount of attention at first but faded into the background rather quickly.

The final Junior they speak with is Takahashi Fu who they end up showing off his head spin, which is still something he is asked to show off whenever he can currently as well.

Hikaru gives the last message of the episode, which seems rather fitting as he is from one of the areas that was affected by the disaster.

The episode ends with HSJ doing a medley of their early singles. This is basically just the single medley that was on their debut album. I rather liked how they did that so I enjoyed this performance, especially as it did seem to have a bit more energy than their previous ones this episode.

I find it hard to try to rate these April 2011 episodes as they were done in far less than ideal circumstances. And it is hard to say if the HSJ-heaviness of them is because that is just where the program is going content-wise or they needed to make sure they could fill the time for the episode and a recap like that was just the easiest way to do it.

It is hard to say this was an enjoyable episode, as there is an air of somberness about it. But it should at least be notable for the fact that this is Matsushima So's first appearance on the program.

The Shounen Club 15 April 2011 review

We get the second episode post the Tohoku quake and tsunami which continues the trend of stripping the production down to the most basic elements. There is a bit more of a mix of songs performed so the theme is not as unified but again it is hard to critique these episodes considering the time they were filmed.

This episode opens up with Hey! Say! JUMP and the main Juniors of the episode on stage. Arioka Daiki, Kawai Fumito, Kitayama Hiromitsu and Fujigaya Taisuke all get turns speaking as they give a brief run down of what to expect to see in the episode.

The first performance of the episode is HSJ's Dreams come true which is used as an introductory song of sorts as part way through Okamoto Keito gives a message in English and ends it by introducing Kis-My-Ft2 and A.B.C-Z. It always feels a bit off having those two groups sing a HSJ song, but at least they have Yabu Kota and Yaotome Hikaru performing with them as they are the two members of HSJ that have been in Johnny's around the same time as some of the members of those two groups.

Up first for the talk segment is B.I.Shadow, though they are down a member. IIRC, Kochi Yugo broke his collar bone around this time and will be missing from Shounen Club for a few months while it heals. The three present though all get to talk about the disaster and give their thoughts about it. I did catch Matsumura Hokuto talking about wanting to help when he saw the footage of it on TV.

The group then performs Sekai ni Hitotsu dake no Hana, which seems a song that is too easy for the group. But it is a classic hit and they do try to at least make the back dancing for it more complicated than usual.

It is then Kis-My-Ft2's turn to give their thoughts about recent events. Or at least Kitayama, Fujigaya and Tamamori Yuta as the other four just get to stand in the background.

Their following performance starts with Kitayama performing his solo song Rock U before the rest of the group join him on stage to perform their group song 3D Girl. This performance is the biggest break so far from what has been performed so far as it is more like the usual Kisumai performances with them doing newer songs with a cool image to them.

A.B.C-Z then follows with the same pattern of having a talk segment first. Totsuka Shota, Hashimoto Ryosuke and Kawai Fumito all get to talk with the other two members standing in the back.

The group then performs Ashita no Tame ni Boku ga Iru. This is a rather fitting song for this time with its lyrics. Not to mention with the smaller stage to perform on a slower tempo song like this means little in the way of acrobatics so how to fit those in the performance did not have to be an issue.

There is a small break to the pattern so far as NYC do not get a talk segment before their performance. They get a quick introduction as then we see them perform Yume no Tamago. It is a fun upbeat song with a good message so it feels like a good fit for the episode. I just wish they had more Juniors back dancing as they started off with none, got a few then picked up a few more to finally fill the stage a bit but it still looked rather empty until the end when they had more file in. They probably should have had most of them out from the start as there is so little on this stage in general.

The following talk segment has us back with Kisumai as we get the VTR from their concert where they learn of their debut. Even though it has been over three years now since then I still find myself feeling the same way as I did when I first watched this. I was so happy for the guys and I am still so incredibly happy that they debuted.

There is then a Junior medley that starts off with a performance of 1 for YOU, which is basically a Morimoto Shintaro with Hip Hop Jump song. Things switch off for Shintaro to to perform BITTER MOON with Snow Prince Gasshoudan before it goes back to him and HHJ performing 1 for YOU again. So it is basically a Shintaro medley featuring other Juniors.

We get a Junior ni Q segment with the young and fresh Juniors. Again it has the theme about words of encouragement. Haba Yuki is up first and shares some he got from a teacher.

Then it is Inoue Mizuki. He gives a phrase that his mother told him the day before he went to audition for Johnny's.

Kurita Kei gets to talk and his is also from his mother, but it was in regards to him being pitcher on a baseball team. And that wraps up that segment.

We go back to a talk segment to introduce a new letter corner, Junior Youbin, to replace the last one. Honestly I am just glad I can type the title out much easier now. They also introduce the Gekkan! Ki ni Naru J segment.

Hey! Say! JUMP then perform Ai-ing -Aishiteru-, which is just a cute song. Definitely something that is just fluffy and energetic enough to get you into a good mode, especially with the performance to go with it.

The final song is another HSJ song, Memories. It is also another HSJ performance as while they have the Juniors come on stage near the end they do not do anything but take up space on stage really. But with that this episode wraps up.

After this pair of episodes we return to the usual NHK Hall stage with the next month's episodes. IIRC, things slowly start going back to normal, and of course Johnny's needed to promote Kisumai as they were still set to debut. Plus they needed to get ready to debut the next FIVB group, Sexy Zone, as most of the members are finally around.

As much as tragic events like the Tohoku quake derail things at the end of the day life must go on. So like the rest of the Japanese entertainment industry Johnny's has to bounce back while doing what they can to support all needed relief efforts at the time.

It has been announced that Johnny's WEST and Hey! Say! JUMP will host a program together called Little Tokyo Live on the TV Tokyo station. This program will be the weekly spin off of the Tokyo Live 22hr that was hosted by various sempai of the two groups.

The program will begin in October and there will be three hosts for each episode, with the three being a mix of members from Johnny's WEST and Hey! Say! JUMP.

Yahoo! NEWS article (Japanese)

I am really happy about this, mainly for JW. It may not be a variety program of their own but it is a start with it at least being a Tokyo program which will give them more exposure. Plus it is always fun to see members from other groups interact and JW should help keep the shows lively.

I just hope at some point we get a little Gokusen 3 reunion with Takaki Yuya, Kiriyama Akito and Nakama Junta. I can already tell that whatever episode gives us this will be my favorite.

Sort of hiatus

Probably should have made the announcement before I started this but I am at the point that I do feel I am at least on a quasi-hiatus. Not sure how long it will last as it is due to just figuring out how I want to balance everything I am trying to do.

Never Ending Music Power will probably see very little change. I still plan on doing my reviews of Shounen Club and drama reviews for the dramas that star Johnny's for the blog and of course talk about new releases for the groups that I follow. I have been thinking about adding another program or so to my review list. The Gamushara shows are topping that list, but I think I will wait to finally catch up with Shounen Club before doing that. I also need to hunt down all the episodes for them first so I can play catch up with those. But I do want to give Kis-My-Ft2's upcoming program, Office Learning Variety OL Club, which is replacing KisuHama TV, a shot. It will probably depend on how I like the first episode and if it is something I feel comfortable enough with reviewing with my limited Japanese. But until I figure out a new schedule things are just going to be rather sporadic for the blog.

But I am trying to do more in general, especially since I have been doing the whole vlogging thing in earnest. I am enjoying doing it more than I expected but I do realize that I have let it take up most of my free time, which is something I do want to change. So I have some ideas on how to cut back with that and it should give me some of my free time back so I can do more with the blogs I am keeping.

And speaking of blogs I do have one for posting my youtube videos on, Thennary Speaks, for those who do not care for watching them on youtube, or want to follow but do not have a youtube account. I also am setting one up for female idols, Morning Girls On The Run, which I am mainly just re-posting the female-idol related entries from this blog and videos I've done related to female idols right now. There are a couple of new posts mixed in, but I do not plan on having it fully up and running until next month. And even then it will mainly just be cross-posting videos from youtube and talking about upcoming releases of the female idol groups I am following. But I do feel I'm better off keeping that separate from NEMP, as my past attempts to mix the two interests never worked out in the long run.

But that sums up everything I am trying to balance. I do hope to be back on track with NEMP by the start of October. Then hopefully I can push on and finally catch up with Shounen Club, as that will also give me some extra free time when I only have two episodes a month to review.

Catching up with some news for NEWS, but the group is getting a variety program they will be hosting together. It will begin to air in October on Nippon TV and while it is set to only be a special there is no mention on how many episodes it will be.

The program will have the members of NEWS communicating with nine individuals via the internet from the studio to their homes. They will also be having NEWS, in teams of two, go and visit the homes as well.

Personally I am just really excited to see NEWS get a group variety program finally. The closest they had before was Soukon, but since that was back when the group had six members it really did not count. Of course this is only a special at the moment but I hope it does well enough that it will become a regular program.

And if this does become a regular program than the group will have something else to attached new songs to, which will hopefully lead to at least one more single a year from them. But I am probably getting ahead of myself with that.

Let's Speculate! Upcoming 2014 CD releases

I do feel bad for neglecting this blog for so long. I am starting to get my schedule figured out so hopefully I will be posting just a bit more here. That said I love speculating from time to time and recently my mind has been on what CD releases to expect to come out before the year ends from the groups I follow.

First up is a bit of a cheat as it has already been announced that Nakayama Yuma will have his debut album coming out in the near future. But the date has yet to be announced so I can guess about that. Personally I am betting on a December release date or possibly late November at earliest. But it is attached to a fan event scheduled for sometime in 2015, which I am assuming is going to be early 2015 so a late 2014 album release date would be needed to give fans time to apply for it. Also this would give Johnny's an easy excuse to get him on all the end of the year music programs they can.

Either way I will be looking forward to the album as while High Five did not impress me too much I still loved Missing Piece and Get Up! If the album is more like those two singles than I am bound to love it as well.

Kis-My-Ft2 since their debut has had a single released near the end of the year, usually in November outside of their debut year when it was in December. I am therefore expecting one last single from them this year. In fact it would be more shocking for them not to release another single in most likely November but they could pull another December date if they need to. None of the members have a drama that they are starring in for this season that I can recall, so no drama theme for them. The tie-ins for their winter singles tend to be light anyway so no big change there. But this would put them on schedule for having their albums get summer releases, as they usually only have three singles before an album and they already have Another Future to count towards their next album so if they have their usual winter and spring singles than an album in summer would work. Which is what I am assuming management is going for as I do not see why else they released a single collection album this year otherwise.

And honestly I ended up loving Another Future so I am also really looking forward to another release from the group.

With Johnny's WEST releasing a new single this month I doubt we will get another CD release from them this year. But that would be fine as they already have two singles and an album to show for their debut year. Also the two singles they have both have drama theme song tie-ins, so I think that will be the telling sign from the group on whether or not they are going to release a new single. Though hopefully as they get better established they can get other tie-ins so they can get a more consistent release pattern down.

I refuse to guess when either NEWS or TOKIO will release a new CD. These two groups seem to have a very my pace attitude when it comes to new releases. Also TOKIO just released a best of album for their 20th anniversary and are in the middle of a tour. I guess they could release a new single before the end of the year, but I have the feeling they may just wait until 2015 instead.

And that covers all the Johnny's that I am actively following. Well outside the Juniors but I do not think we are going to get a Junior release any time in the near future.

Busaiku to lead a drama

The next NTV late night drama has been announced and this time it will star the members of the Kis-My-Ft2 sub-unit Busaiku. It will have the four play salaryman, but use their own names for the roles. The drama will start on October 18th and is titled Heisei Busaiku Otoko.

So far there is only a photo of the newspaper article to confirm this, but I am sure there will be other sources soon enough.

In any case I am really happy for the Busaiku four. This is a good opportunity for them as it is another way to show their appeal, or perhaps lack there of as their characters are all rather busaiku in nature. But still, it is another program they get to be on and they will have to do some promotion for it.

I do wonder what they will do for theme songs, just use the songs the group has already down or actually get a new one that they will release as a single. If it is the later I wonder if that will affect the release schedule for Kis-My-Ft2 by much. But this is all wild speculation for now as there still is not much known about the drama but the bare basics.

My favs (2014)

Again been just running thoughts through my head and figured I should go over who my favorite member of the groups I follow are.

Like always Nagase Tomoya is my favorite of TOKIO. I do like the rest of the group but he just has the biggest impact on me. I mean my dream guy is definitely someone who is like him after all.

Kato Shigeaki is still my favorite member of NEWS. Even though he is not a member that naturally stands out I find him interesting and the kind of person I would love to be able to just talk to.

With Kis-My-Ft2 I am facing a renewed interest in the group. While I have never ignored them there was a time I did not follow them as much but now I really want to see more of them. Senga Kento has been a favorite but right now I do not feel like I really have a favorite anymore. Watching them now I find that I enjoy watching everyone and feel like I am learning about them all over again.

Johnny's WEST has proven a bit more difficult to figure out a favorite. I had favorites of the Junior groups that it was made from, Kiriyama Akito for B.A.D. and Fujii Ryusei for 7WEST. Now that they are in the same group it is hard to say which one is favored over the other. Also I am beginning to notice Hamada Takahiro and Kamiyama Tomohiro so I think it will be a while to get a clear favorite from the group.

With the Juniors my favorites are still the six from the Bakaleya6. Overall I feel my interest in the Juniors wane and feel once these six move on to whatever is next for them I may be moving on from the Juniors in general. But it is so hard to say what the future will bring and the only sure thing is that Jesse, Matsumura Hokuto, Kochi Yugo, Morimoto Shintaro, Tanaka Juri and Kyomoto Taiga have my interest and support.

And that about covers things for me. Honestly I am a bit surprised that I do not have as many favorites locked in as I thought I did. But that is one thing I do enjoy Johnny's is following groups and watching members grow and it is the newer groups that I am mainly undecided on.

Yuma's 1st Chapter

Looks like my speculation about Nakayama Yuma's upcoming album was pretty on the mark as it is set to be released the last week of November on the 26th. The title of the album is Chapter 1 and it will come in two different versions.

The limited edition will come with a DVD that will have a Short Film for the album song, Kosaten, with a making of feature. It will also have ten tracks on the CD.

The regular edition will just be the CD but it will have thirteen tracks, the bonus tracks being: Oyasumi, Hustler and Kiseki, Mitsukeni.

And there is a bundle offered by CDJapan if you want to get both versions.

I am rather excited for this album, mainly because I am still enjoying Yuma's latest single, Get Up! quite a bit. And of the four single tracks on the album there is only one I do not like, High Five. And speaking of those tracks Akuma na Koi from Nakayama Yuma w/B.I. Shadow will be getting an album version, which I am expecting to be a solo version of the song. (Which it technically was from the start but I still expect this song to be a Yuma only version.)

In any case I will definitely be picking this up, though I want to wait and see if I was right about Kis-My-Ft2 releasing a new single before the end of the year so I can get both in one order.

Johnny's WEST for the new year

Johnny's WEST will be celebrating the new year with a series of concerts in Yokohama Arena and Osaka Jo Hall.

I think what makes these concerts so special is that they will be first for JW post-debut. And while they are not performing in many venues the ones they are both are a good size for a freshly debuted unit.

I do hope that with these concerts we will get an announcement for the group's next single. Or perhaps at least get the concert a DVD/BD release for the concert or their pre-debut concert.

No matter what I am happy for the group and wish I could go. Maybe one day.
